Irregular Bleeding

It is not normal for cycles to be more frequent than 21 days OR longer than 45 days. This may be a sign of hormonal problems and should be checked.

Cycles should be longer than 3 days and shorter than 8 days

Spotting between cycles may point to abnormalities in the vagina, cervix or uterus.
QUESTION / APPOINTMENT

Heavy Bleeding

A normal menstrual bleed usually lasts no longer than 7 days.
It should not be associated with bright red clots.
It should not be excessive. Your menstrual bleed is excessive if sanitary pads have to be frequently changed OR if you need to use heavy duty/maternity pads OR if despite all the care the bleeding overflows and stains.
Something is wrong if you always feel tired and weak after a cycle.
Many women / girls suffer heavy menstrual loss because they think this is normal when it is actually harmful to their health.

Painful menstrual cycles

Bloating and discomfort usually during the first 2 days of the cycle is normal.

However, if pain severe enough causing visits to emergency departments OR missing classes or work, there could be underlying problems and should be checked.

If pain begins before bleeds and lasts until after the cycle... it is abnormal and could point to pelvic problems such as endometriosis. This may be a cause of difficulty to conceive (infertility)
