AFTER 40

Life starts at 40.
Most women do not have any problems.

The following minimum is recommended:

  • twice a year gynae check-up
  • pap-smear (Specialised pap smear reduces frequency of smears)
  • Mammograms once every 2 years

Seek gynae advice for the following:
  • irregular menses
  • post-coital (after sex) bleeding
  • lumps in your breast
  • feeling sweaty / hot flushes
  • difficulty sleeping
  • bone/ back aches

Plan for the future. Your gynae should assess you for risks for other medical conditions:
  • diabetes
  • heart disease
  • hypertension
  • cancers

AFTER MENOPAUSE

Menopause is part of life.
Most women will go through menopause without much problems. Others will find menopause troublesome.
Asian women differ from others in the way they experience menopause symptoms. Western women complain more of flushes and sweats and mood swings. Asian women complain more of bone aches and difficulty sleeping and mood swings.
Most women have these symptoms for a certain duration before they resolve. Some are persistent. Some have severe manifestations. Treatment is available for improved quality of life.

The medical risks of menopausal women now equals that of males. The protective female hormones are no longer produced by the ovaries. RIsks of diabetes, heart disease and stroke and hypertension rises to equal that of males. Your gynae will be able to discuss the options with you after relevant tests.

Osteoporosis (brittle bone) is a major concern. Bone density declines rapidly after menopause. The main reason why the elderly are hospitalized in later years is osteoporotic fractures after minor falls. This is the start of the decline. Preserving bone mass now saves lives. Various treatment options are available based on severity of osteoporosis or the rate of decline of bone density.

With age comes the cancer worry. All cancers are strongly linked with age. By the time a woman is 70 years of age, one in 8 of her friends of the similar age will have cancer. The most common cancer affecting women are as follows in declining order:
  1. breast
  2. colon
  3. cervix
  4. lung
  5. stomach
  6. endometrium
  7. liver
  8. ovary
  9. thyroid
  10. lymphoma
