ZIKA VIRUS AND AEDES

Malaysia has reported cases. Zika virus is spread by the aedes mosquito, the same one that spreads dengue.
And we will be next.
Let us be prepared.

Zika causes dengue like fever. Some may experiences neurological disturbances. In many it may not cause symptoms at all. In men it remains in seminal fluid up to 6 months after the infection.

ZIKA AND PREGNANCY

Zika infection in pregnant women affects the baby. It causes destruction of brain cells in the unborn baby resulting in a small brain, causing a small head - microcephaly. This is associated with severe mental retardation.

Pregnant women may get infected by the following pathways:
1. Unprotected sex with an infected individual
​2. Direct infected mosquitoe bite

PREVENTION BETTER

All pregnant women should take all precaution to prevent being bitten by mosquitoes. Pregnant women are 5 times more likely to be bitten by mosquitoes. Most mosquito repellents are safe in pregnancy. Sleeping under mosquito nets will provide safety if your home is not mosquito netted

If you are having sex in ZIka hotspots OR with someone who has just returned from those hotspots - practice contraceptionwhile you still in hotspots and a further month after return

If you are pregnant and your partner has travelled ZIKA hotspot - practise protected sex until the delivery
